Barefoot Trims by Mel
I believe that all horses have the ability to live their lives barefoot.
Every horse. From pasture pets, to working partners, to high level performance horses, they all can be barefoot.
As horse owners, we are the hindering factor.
That can be a tough pill to swallow.
Very few horses who live in the care of humans are kept in an environment that mirrors the conditions of wild horses. As their caregivers we are quick to assume that what we offer is better. Some elements are and some are not.
Strong, healthy hooves require movement and stimulation from dry, rocky terrain. Many miles per day are covered by the herd. The rocky terrain and miles covered keep the hooves worn down and stimulated in a way that soft surfaces cannot.
In my practice I strive to simulate the wear pattern the horse would have if it were in its native conditions. This requires partnership and dedication between myself and the horse’s caretaker. In general, the horses that I care for are on a much shorter trim cycle than many are used to. Depending on the needs of the horse, I will trim their hooves on a 1-5 week schedule.
